Celebrity divorce rarely surprises us anymore. It is clear that love is fragile. While divorces and separations are common among celebrities, however, 2017 was a particularly noteworthy year.
On July 13, 2017, after being married for nearly a decade, Chris Pratt and Anna Faris made the decision to legally separate. Pratt, who met Faris on the set of Take Me Home Tonight, filed for dissolution marriage due to irreconcilable differences, as confirmed by PEOPLE. Court filings obtained by PEOPLE also indicate that Pratt sought joint custody of their five-year-old son, Jack.
In response to Pratt’s filing, Faris submitted a request for joint custody and child support, according to TMZ reports. The former couple, who already had a prenuptial agreement, are expected to enter into property settlement in the near future.
Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor announced their separation on May 26, 2017 in a joint statement. The statement read: “With tremendous love and respect for each other, and the 18 years we spent together as a couple, we have made the decision to separate. Our priority will continue to be raising our children as devoted parents and the closest of friends.”
The couple has two children together. They initial met on the set of the film Heat Vision and Jack, and later co-starred in an array of different movies.
In January of 2017, a week after having their first child, Janet Jackson and Wissam Al Mana formally separated. The couple did not announce their separation until months later. During the couple’s divorce proceedings in June of 2017, Janet sought full custody of her son Eissa. According to an interview with PEOPLE, Janet’s brother Randy explained that Wissam was verbally abusive and also made Janet feel like a “prisoner in her own home.”
Married since 2014, film star Scarlett Johansson and journalist Romain Dauriac filed for divorce in March of 2017. As part of the divorce, Scarlett sought sole custody of their three-year-old daughter, Rose, which in turn led to a custody battle. According to Page Six, by September of 2017 the couple had reach settlement to both finalize their divorce and end their custody battle.
In August of 2014, after spending over two-decades married to each other, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sara Kapfer filed for legal separation. According to E! News, however, the couple did not file for divorce until January 19, 2017. Court documents obtained by E! News reveal that the couple cited the reason as irreconcilable differences. Additionally, these documents indicate that he requested joint legal and physical custody of their then 10-year old daughter, Piper.
Married for over five years, Friends star David Schwimmer and photographer Zoe Buckman announced their separation in April of 2017. The announcement of their separation indicates that their most important concern moving forward is the well-being of their daughter, Cleo. As provided in their statement to USA Today: “Our priority is, of course, our daughter’s happiness and well-being during this challenging time, so we ask for your support and respect for our privacy as we continue to raise her together and navigate this new chapter for our family.”
